I was going to post another installment of The Act of Marriage live-blog series today, but I’m on the upswing from an epic two-day migraine and blogging didn’t happen. So instead, have some pictures of Geraldine!

she’s just discovered the back of the couch as a perch
and likes to keep an eye on us while we’re working (also steal sunshine)*
then there’s the shameless flirting with guests …
can I haz TARDIS?

*Usually “keeping an eye on” translates to “sitting on the keyboard and/or page of the book the human is reading” … so in the grand scheme of things, a little hip-cuddling is very polite behavior!

cat blogging, domesticity, holidays

One year ago today, Geraldine came to stay with us. This was the first thing she did after recovering from the car ride by peeing under the bed:

It’s still one of my favorite kitty photographs, and one of Geraldine’s favorite lookout spots.

Over the passed year Gerry has gone from being a cranky and standoffish cat to being a cranky and invasive-of-personal-space cat. She’s still only grudgingly a lap cat — and even then only for very short periods of time — but nevertheless manages to be very present in our lives whether it’s underfoot while we’re making human food in the kitchen (you never know when kitty food might fall from the sky!) or hogging half the couch (it might be a three-cushion couch, but is clearly only made for one human + cat) or announcing her desire for breakfast at two in the morning by climbing onto my chest and delicately pressing her claws into the hollow between my breasts.

There are times — usually during said 2am “feed me! play with me!” sessions — that I feel having a three-year-old cat is much closer to having a human three-year-old than Hanna ever thought we’d be. Albeit a three-year-old that doesn’t need us to be able to afford childcare or a stay-at-home parent! But (much like, I imagine, like parenting … though obviously to a lesser degree) she’s become an integral part of the family. We’re ever so glad she came to stay.

This being the first weekend post-thesis, I had the urge to clean. All that stuff that had been accumulating over the course of the winter months that we said to one another “we’ll take care of that when …” suddenly felt like too much and just had to go.

Even though this is a tiny apartment, we’re going to have to tackle this in stages. Stage one was our closets, which basically double as our only form of storage apart from under the bed. In addition to cleaning, we also wanted to do the great changeover of winter-to-summer clothes and linens, putting away the flannel sheets and wool sweaters until next autumn.

Here’s what we ended up gathering together for Goodwill.

At least most of it came from Goodwill in the 1st place?

And (yay!) here’s what our spectacularly organized closets looked like when we were through:

The cat was spectacularly unimpressed and thought we should be playing with her instead.

Unimpressed cat is unimpressed

We agree with Gerry that playing string is more fun
than spring cleaning any day!

Up next weekend: book organization and the kitchen cupboards!

…who posts incessantly about their pets.

(*kof*kof*)

But the thing is, I just discovered that Black Cat Rescue, the shelter through whom we adopted Verity Geraldine (formerly Marie), made a video of our kitty when she was a mama cat with her kittens not so long ago.

And who doesn’t need a kitten fix mid-week? I mean, really.

The folks at BCR are so happy that mama cat has finally found a home, following in the footsteps (paw-steps?) of her kittens, who were all adopted back in June.

Despite — or perhaps because of? — the fact this was a short week here in Massachusetts (they take their federal holidays seriously in the commonwealth!), I feel like I’ve been running perpetually behind the last few days and don’t have much energy or inspiration for serious blogging. So when in doubt — post photos!

Here are the latest snapshots of the newest member of our family, a two-year-old kitty who has so far refused to tell us her true name. Front-runners thus far include Maida, Zia, Romana, Sarah Jane and Lucia. So far, she seems to have a slight preference for Sarah Jane … but stay tuned for updates.

Under the tablecloth is a good place for lurking.

meditation skillz from Hanna

And of course the most important task of any cat is
to meet their daily quota of nap attacks!

Have a lovely weekend, and I’ll try to come up with something feminist-librarian-activist to rant about come next week!

Hanna and I have been talking about adopting a cat for several months now, and this weekend we went to visit the first candidate — a two-year-old female, Marie, who is currently living at a lively foster home in Haverhill. Her foster family patiently allowed us to sit with her for about an hour and despite the lack of sardines in our pockets we did not seem to offend her. Stay tuned for further developments!

In unrelated news (besides being in the realm of cool photographs and animal photography), Hanna finally succeeded in capturing a decent photograph of our resident spider, Charles, who resides outside our kitchen window on a beautifully-constructed web.

Have a good rest of the week everybody!
