cat blogging, domesticity, from the neighborhood, photos

This being the first weekend post-thesis, I had the urge to clean. All that stuff that had been accumulating over the course of the winter months that we said to one another “we’ll take care of that when …” suddenly felt like too much and just had to go.

Even though this is a tiny apartment, we’re going to have to tackle this in stages. Stage one was our closets, which basically double as our only form of storage apart from under the bed. In addition to cleaning, we also wanted to do the great changeover of winter-to-summer clothes and linens, putting away the flannel sheets and wool sweaters until next autumn.

Here’s what we ended up gathering together for Goodwill.

At least most of it came from Goodwill in the 1st place?

And (yay!) here’s what our spectacularly organized closets looked like when we were through:

The cat was spectacularly unimpressed and thought we should be playing with her instead.

Unimpressed cat is unimpressed

We agree with Gerry that playing string is more fun
than spring cleaning any day!

Up next weekend: book organization and the kitchen cupboards!

This passed Saturday, Hanna volunteered as a judge for one of the local 4-H clubs’ Visual Presentations competitions. Hanna used to do 4-H as a child in Maine, and a colleague at Countway roped her into getting involved in the day’s activities. I tagged along as the driver (and last-minute door monitor).

There’s already been talk of Hanna joining the advisory committee … so there may be more 4-H in our near future. I promise if I come across any bunnies I will photograph them and provide pictures here on the blog!

Following the recent snow day here in Boston, Hanna and I noticed this snowman along our usual walk to work (outside an apartment building near Audubon Circle for those who know the area). Thought y’all would enjoy the creativity at work here!

Why is the snowman worried?

cat blogging, domesticity, from the neighborhood, photos

Despite — or perhaps because of? — the fact this was a short week here in Massachusetts (they take their federal holidays seriously in the commonwealth!), I feel like I’ve been running perpetually behind the last few days and don’t have much energy or inspiration for serious blogging. So when in doubt — post photos!

Here are the latest snapshots of the newest member of our family, a two-year-old kitty who has so far refused to tell us her true name. Front-runners thus far include Maida, Zia, Romana, Sarah Jane and Lucia. So far, she seems to have a slight preference for Sarah Jane … but stay tuned for updates.

Under the tablecloth is a good place for lurking.

She seems to be picking up wicked
meditation skillz from Hanna

And of course the most important task of any cat is
to meet their daily quota of nap attacks!

Have a lovely weekend, and I’ll try to come up with something feminist-librarian-activist to rant about come next week!

cat blogging, domesticity, from the neighborhood

Hanna and I have been talking about adopting a cat for several months now, and this weekend we went to visit the first candidate — a two-year-old female, Marie, who is currently living at a lively foster home in Haverhill. Her foster family patiently allowed us to sit with her for about an hour and despite the lack of sardines in our pockets we did not seem to offend her. Stay tuned for further developments!

In unrelated news (besides being in the realm of cool photographs and animal photography), Hanna finally succeeded in capturing a decent photograph of our resident spider, Charles, who resides outside our kitchen window on a beautifully-constructed web.

Have a good rest of the week everybody!

It’s been one of those weeks where I’m a little brain-dead and don’t have much of substance to say. Luckily, I have great friends who do blog-posting for me when my brain has died. So today, I’m sending you over to Hanna’s blog to check out some wonderful photographs she took recently with her brand-new digital camera.

boston, from the neighborhood, photos, random kindness

When Hanna and I arrived at the train station in Lowell a couple of weekends ago, en route to Lunenberg, we happened to spot this helpful message on the side of a traincar.

“Very soon the dead will rise out of their graves.”

I’m not sure if this is meant to be a eschatalogical prediction or a warning about zombie invasion. Either way, I feel the person who painted it with a certain public spiritedness about them.

Possibly, they could have benefitted from the company of whomever offered this bit of advice outside one of the Berklee School of Music buildings near the Massachusetts Historical Society.

“Keep your chin up, old sport.”

On Mother’s Day, Hanna and I took the train up to Lowell where we met her parents and went visiting in Lunenberg, to the home of a family friend whom Hanna has known all her life.

Estelle served us blueberry muffins and tea and showed us around her gorgeous garden, just beginning to bloom for the summer.

It was a freezing day, despite the sunshine, and I had to borrow one of Linda’s coats to stay warm.

We were sent away with armfuls (literally!) of flowers to leave at Hanna’s grandparents’ graves.

domesticity, from the neighborhood, photos

I piled a bunch of angst up in the early part of the week, and I thought y’all might be able to use a little break from my soapboxing. So here’s a picture of delicious corn molasses pancakes I made this morning. (Seriously: what could possibly be more anti-angst than pancakes??)

Wednesday is my thesis-writing day and so before Hanna and I take our morning constitutional and I drop her off at work before returning to craft eloquent sentences and pretentious footnotes, I get up and make pancakes. These particular pancakes are a recent find @ Joy the Baker and are awesome. Frankly, we can’t get enough of them.
